Why did God choose to include this motif as part of His revelation to man? Scripture itself does not give a direct explanation, so the answer cannot be definitive. It appears at critical times in the narrative of the history of God’s people, and hardly another motif is as rich in content. While perhaps not found with as much frequency as other motifs in the Bible, the theme of the shepherd is very significant. In Genesis 48:15, as Jacob, on his deathbed summarized his life, he declared that God had been his “ shepherd all of his life to this day.” In Revelation 7:17, when the saints who come out of the tribulation are brought before God, John brings together two of the most striking images of the scripture by stating, " for the Lamb in the center of the throne shall be their shepherd and shall guide them to springs of the water of life and God shall wipe every tear from their eye.” The idea of shepherding, and in specific the idea of God acting as the Shepherd of His people, is a motif found throughout the Bible, from beginning to end. In specific it will answer the following three questions: Why might have God chosen to use this particular image? What are the characteristics of a good shepherd? Who is the Shepherd that is to come referred to in the Old Testament? Why the image of the shepherd? This paper will attempt to explore the shepherding motif in some detail. In the New Testament, Jesus identifies himself as the Good Shepherd and we find in the epistles the notion of good shepherding extended to those who would lead in the church. In the Old Testament God has words of strong rebuke and warning for bad shepherds, and prophecies of a good shepherd that is to come. The motif of the shepherd is found throughout the scripture. ![]() Rahim Kurwa, a professor of criminology, law and justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago, argues that neighborhood surveillance platforms such as Neighbors perpetuate a much longer history of the policing of race in residential space. Although the dragnet indiscriminately captures everyone, including children, there are obvious racial, gendered and class-based inequities when it comes to who is targeted and labelled as “out of place” in residential space. Ring’s pervasive network of cameras expands the dragnet of everyday pre-emptive surveillance – a dragnet that surveils anyone who passes into its gaze, whether a suspect in a crime or not. Except, unlike an informant, it’s always watching. In doing so, Ring blurs the line between police work and civilian surveillance and turns your neighbor’s home security system into an informant. By partnering with Amazon, law enforcement circumvents these constitutional and statutory protections, as noted by the attorney Yesenia Flores. Because Ring cameras are owned by civilians, law enforcement are given a backdoor entry into private video recordings of people in residential and public space that would otherwise be protected under the fourth amendment. Ring’s cloud-based infrastructure (supported by Amazon Web Services) makes it convenient for law enforcement agencies to place mass requests for access to recordings without a warrant. These partnerships are growing at an alarming rate.ĭata I’ve collected from Ring’s quarterly reported numbers shows that in the past year through the end of April 2021, law enforcement have placed more than 22,000 individual requests to access content captured and recorded on Ring cameras. That is, in as little as three years, Ring connected around one in 10 police departments across the US with the ability to access recorded content from millions of privately owned home security cameras. Then there’s this: since Amazon bought Ring in 2018, it has brokered more than 1,800 partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, who can request recorded video content from Ring users without a warrant. The always-on video surveillance network extends even further when you consider the millions of users on Ring’s affiliated crime reporting app, Neighbors, which allows people to upload content from Ring and non-Ring devices. ![]() Amazon is cagey about how many Ring cameras are active at any one point in time, but estimates drawn from Amazon’s sales data place yearly sales in the hundreds of millions. An estimated 400,000 Ring devices were sold in December 2019 alone, and that was before the across-the-board boom in online retail sales during the pandemic. Ring is effectively building the largest corporate-owned, civilian-installed surveillance network that the US has ever seen. ![]() ![]() ![]() The MBTA has installed cages for more secure bike parking at several commuter rail and subway stations, so you can bike to the station instead of driving or using additional transit services – visit their site for all the locations and to register your CharlieCard for free access to these bike cages.īikes on the T – why leave your bike behind if you could take it with you? But take a closer look at The Dark Knight Rises, and you can tell the camp is there. Nolan seems like the kind of director who would consider “camp” an insult to his prestige and hyperrealistic brand of filmmaking. The words “camp” and “Christopher Nolan” don’t seem to fit in the same sentence. That’s supposedly his happy ending, but how can he, or we, for that matter, be happy when it’s clear that everyone involved with the movie is happiest when the Caped Crusader is out and about? Wait, is this supposed to be camp? The Dark Knight Rises features Bruce at his blandest, which isn’t great for a film that’s supposed to encourage its audience to root for Bruce, especially considering it ends (really old spoiler) with him abandoning Batman for good. Every second Bale spends out of the cowl is torture for him and us, and we can tell he’s counting the seconds until he can put it back on. Because Nolan doesn’t find Bruce appealing, the audience doesn’t either. Bruce’s scenes are uncomfortable and slow, there to allow for Batman’s eventual return. With Batman out of the game for the movie’s first act, Nolan gets saddled with a character he simply doesn’t find interesting, and we can tell. Nowhere is this clearer than in The Dark Knight Rises. And Bruce can choke, for all Nolan and Bale care. ![]() All his intent and attention go to playing Batman, injecting the masked hero with genuine complexity and nuance. In keeping with this approach, Christian Bale plays Bruce as a stiff and charmless bystander, a suit that somehow learned how to walk. It portrays him as a prop, nothing more than a character played by the genuine persona, Batman, the brooding hunter that stalks criminals at night. The Dark Knight trilogy is an insult to Bruce Wayne in nearly every way possible. Nolan wasn’t the first to toy with the Bruce-is-the-mask idea, but he was the one to exploit it to its fullest - and ugliest. ![]() The man is as important as the Bat, and failing to see this is a blatant misinterpretation of the character. Attributes are a nice update, but I always end up going back to using ValueObjects whenever I need to write a CFrame or Instance into memory for reasons like a checkpoint system or other. Both include light, regular, and bold weights, with oblique equivalents. I also agree with this, would be nice to finally have built-in support for custom enums like they’re their own asset specifically only for the game (even better if scripts recognize these enums).
